Cycling Apparel Maintenance: Tips for Keeping Your Gear in Top Shape
Share
Your cycling apparel is not only an investment in your comfort and performance; it's a reflection of your your personal style and image you portray to the world. To ensure your gear continues to serve you well, it's important to give it the care and attention it deserves. In this guide, we'll provide you with valuable tips for maintaining your cycling apparel, keeping it in pristine condition, and extending its lifespan.
1. Read The Care Labels
Any cycling company worth its salt will tell you exactly how they prefer their apparel to be washed (we do this at Citius because we want your investment to last and for you to always look your best on the bike). These labels will tell you everything you need to know when it comes to washing, drying, and other care procedures specific to the fabric and construction of your gear. Following these guidelines is essential for maintaining the integrity of the materials. That being said, if you want some more reasons why or some more explanation, read on...
2. If You Want to go the Extra Mile, Hand Wash
While many cycling jerseys and shorts are machine washable, hand washing is a gentler option. It's not totally necessary, per se, but it will guarantee that your gear stays pristine. Fill a basin or sink with lukewarm water and use a mild detergent. Gently agitate the water and let your apparel soak for a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
3. To Reduce the Chance of Damage, Use a Mesh Bag
If you choose to machine wash your gear, place it inside a mesh laundry bag. This is another step that's a bit above and beyond, but if you've already got a mesh bag lying around, put it to good use. Putting all your cycling clothing inside a bag (it does tend to pile up quickly) will prevent your clothing from getting tangled with other items in the machine, reducing the risk of damage. It also keeps it all in one place so that unlike those socks that are perpetually escaping, you won't have to sacrifice any of your gear to the washing machine gods.
4. Zip Up Your Zippers
Always remember to zip up zippers and secure velcro straps before washing. This prevents them from snagging on other clothing or getting damaged in the wash.
5. Skip Fabric Softeners
This one is super important. Fabric softeners can leave residue that affects the moisture-wicking properties of your cycling apparel. If you value your ability to sweat without consequence, avoid using fabric softeners, and opt for a detergent specially formulated for sports or technical clothing.
6. Turn Apparel Inside Out
Turn your jerseys, shorts, and other cycling clothing inside out before washing. This helps protect the printed or delicate surfaces from abrasion and friction, preserving their appearance. On our jerseys this isn't a big concern, as our patterns are sublimated (meaning imprinted at a molecular level) and won't fade.
7. Mild Detergent and Cold Water
When machine washing, use a mild, sports-specific detergent and cold water. Cold water helps prevent color fading and minimizes the risk of shrinkage. Cold water also helps lower your electricity bill. It's a win-win. Also, avoid using bleach, as it can damage the fabric.
8. Hang Dry
Never throw your cycling gear in the dryer. Just pretend the dryer doesn't exist when it comes to your cycling clothes. The heat can damage the elastic materials in the fabric. The last thing you want is for your sleek outfit to become loose and baggy.
9. Store Properly
Store your cycling apparel in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Avoid storing it in a damp, confined space as this can lead to mildew or odors. Gotta keep you smelling fresh.
Proper care not only extends the lifespan of your gear but also enhances your cycling experience, allowing you to focus on the road ahead, not on the condition of your clothing.
